Annual Peanut Butter Drive

Every year President Patty Rose of the Pierce County Labor Agency spearheads our annual peanut butter drive. Since 2011, the Labor Agency, along with the Affiliates and other friends of the Pierce County Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, have supported the National Letter Carriers’ food drive by collecting primarily Union-made JIF peanut butter to feed hungry families in Pierce County.

Peanut butter is an excellent source of protein, has a considerable shelf life, and is a welcome food product that is easy for schools to distribute through their weekend and vacation backpack programs for students facing food insecurity.

In 2015, 7,897 jars weighing in at 12,642 pounds were donated to the Emergency Food Network through its network of local food banks and feeding programs in Pierce County. Incredibly, with 1 in 6 people in Pierce County relying on food banks for at least of a family’s food needs, all of this peanut butter was gone in less than 2 months.

The attachment has more information on this year’s peanut butter drive and can be downloaded and distributed as needed. The photo shows the head of one of our affiliates fulfilling her promise to the members of her Local to wear a Batman costume if they would bring in 3,483 jars of peanut butter. They did that and more!
