JERRY BECKENDORF
COMMUNITY SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP
Recognizing the next generation of union leaders, community advocates, and changemakers.
The Jerry Beckendorf Community Service Scholarship celebrates graduating high school seniors from union families in Pierce County who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to serving others and strengthening their communities.
Since its establishment in 2003, the scholarship has awarded more than $128,700 to 151 graduating seniors, helping young people pursue higher education while recognizing the meaningful difference they've already made through volunteerism, leadership, and community service.
Grounded in the labor movement's belief that we are stronger when we stand together, this scholarship recognizes students who look beyond themselves, take action to address challenges in their communities, and demonstrate a lasting commitment to making the world a better place.

What We Look For
Community service is at the heart of this scholarship. We seek students who demonstrate initiative, compassion, and a commitment to improving the lives of others.
Whether addressing food insecurity, supporting neighbors experiencing homelessness, helping families in need, or contributing to other community causes, applicants should demonstrate how their service has made a meaningful impact.
Applications are evaluated in four key areas:
-
Community Service: The amount and diversity of volunteer experience, including service beyond school or religious organizations.
-
Leadership: How applicants have taken initiative, inspired others, and developed leadership skills through service.
-
Impact: The difference their volunteer efforts have made in their communities and in the lives of others.
